Children are "ready" when they can count to 10 and know the alphabet A-G.  They need to be able to focus and participate during a 30 minute lesson.

I've taught students age 2-87.  I also specialize in working with an adult clientele.  I have taught a broad array of professionals including lawyers, engineers, mathematicians, artists, a policeman, fashion designer etc.  Effort, diligence and consciousness have no limits. 

Adults often progress faster than children. One exceptional adult student practiced 4 hours daily while working full time. Usually beginners start with 15-20 minute practice sessions. 

Practicing is essential.  It helps build language skills by training the ears to recognize different sounds and nuances.  It has been linked to improved academic performance and concentration.  Practicing music can increase I.Q. and stimulate brain activity.  In addition music teaches discipline, patience and perseverance.  

Practicing supports muscle development and motor skills.  It boosts self-esteem by providing a sense of achievement and progress.  Playing music brings joy to the performer and the listener.
